Liberal Democrats for Drug Policy Reform

Welcome to the Liberal Democrats for Drug Policy Reform Website

It is my hope that this website can become the hub of activity promoting drug policy reform within the Liberal Democrat party.

This website is intended to be a resource where those interested in drug policy can discover how prohibition of currently illegal drugs impacts upon individuals, our local communities, and on communities around the world.

For those already well-informed on the issues surrounding drug policy reform, it is my hope that this website can become a thriving forum. A forum I hope will produce an effective policy for the reduction of the negative impacts drugs and prohibition are having across the globe.

For those candidates who wish to stand under the banner of Liberal Democrats for Drug Policy Reform, it is my hope that we can produce campaigning materials that will lay out in detail the reasons to embrace the LDDPR position. With LDDPR support, I hope Liberal Democrats across the country will be able to confidently state their support for sensible, evidence-based policy aimed at the reduction of crime, prostitution and personal suffering, and at the promotion of education, compassion and the safety of our children and young people.

All around this nation children are being pressured into drug use without any knowledge of how it may affect their lives. Teenage prostitutes are putting themselves in grave danger to fund an addiction they can not control. And British soldiers are being killed in Afghanistan by bullets and bombs bought with the proceeds from an illicit heroin trade that we could end if we only had the courage to do what is right.

LDDPR will only achieve its goals if you contribute your ideas and invite others to do the same. We are working against the clock. With youth unemployment at a historic high, we risk losing another generation to the horrors of prohibited addiction. And with Barack Obama in the White House, and large sections of the media on our side, there has never been a better opportunity to change locally and internationally how politicians address this issue.

Control and regulation motion nearly ready for submission

Tue 5th Jan 2010

Hello all. Following very constructive advice from the head of policy, the drug policy reform motion is nearly ready for submission. If you are a rep for your local party or can arrange to be a rep before next Wednesday, please let me know if you want to support the motion's submission. You might also like to run the motion past your local party to get them to back it, or lobby an SAO you are active in to gain their backing. For those of you who blog or tweet, any supporting blogposts of tweets can help get the message out there and build support for the motion. The more people seen to be backing the motion, the greater the chance of it being debated at conference.

Campaign Launched to gather 50 voting reps to support control and regulation motion for Spring conference.

Sat 19th Dec 2009

The campaign to gather support for motions for Federal and Scottish conferences was launched tonight on Lib Dem ACT http://act.libdems.org.uk/group/liberaldemocratsfordrugpolicyreform?xg_source=activity and the new LDDPR blog http://lddpr.blogspot.com/ Please get in touch if you wish to see these motions discussed at conference and do please spread the word to your friends within the Liberal Democrats who could also add their names as supporting voting reps. The target I'm hoping to reach is 50 voting reps for the Federal conference motion, which should be easily achievable if everyone on the mailing list and in the Lib Dem ACT group gets in contact. So do please get in touch and spread the word.

Supporting arguments produced and Lib Dem ACT

Mon 7th Dec 2009

I have now drafted arguments for Women Liberal Democrats, Ethnic Minority Liberal Democrats, Green Lib Dems and MPs and PPCs that I hope might persuade them to support the motion. They can be found in the forums under the Building a Coalition heading.

Changes to website and second draft of motion for conference

Wed 25th Nov 2009

Hello All,

First draft of motion available for criticism

Thu 19th Nov 2009

I have drafted the drug legalisation motion for Liberal Democrat Spring conference. Please suggest amendments at the "The Policy Motion for Spring Conference" forum or by e-mailing me direct if you wish. I feel we need a motion text sooner rather than later so that we can firstly redraft the motion into one that we feel would be effective, and secondly to gather a coalition of organisations and individuals in support of the motion before submitting it to the Federal Conference Committee for consideration.
