Welcome to the Liberal Democrats for Drug Policy Reform WebsiteJoin the Liberal Democrats for Drug Policy Reform. The Liberal Democrats for Drug Policy Reform are interested primarily in the reduction of harm associated with drug use. From alcohol to heroin, drugs are having grave impacts upon our society and there is not enough rational discussion within political parties of how we reduce those impacts. Now that the Liberal Democrats are a party of government LDDPR have a real opportunity to shape the policy of not only the Liberal Democrats, but of the coalition partnership that decides how we regulate or prohibit drugs in this country. We have produced a policy motion "Evidence based drugs policy" which calls for an impact assessment of current drug policy, asking experts to compare our current approach with the potential benefits of stricter prohibition, decriminalisation, or the government control and regulation of drugs. I hope to learn soon that this motion has been accepted for debate in Liverpool in September. Due to concern about politicians' fear of open discussion of drugs policy, LDDPR commissioned a poll. The poll did away with the standard "Do you think drugs should be legalised" question and tried instead to detail what strict government control and regulation could look like and ask participants whether they would prefer light regulation, strict control and regulation or prohibition for a series of drugs. The results have been quite remarkable. Over two thirds of Conservative voters would prefer to see cannabis legalised and regulated. I dearly hope we have demonstrated with this poll that politicians of all parties can stop scaremongering and work together in an attempt to address some of the very serious problems we face.
